On October 23, the open water swim community lost one of the most inspirational, well respected, and competitive swimmers the sport has ever seen.  But as Fran Crippen has last an indelible mark on all of our lives, this race has been established in his name to pay tribute to the legacy he left us.  This race will embody the love for the sport of swimming and the eagerness to compete at our highest potential.  All of the proceeds from the race will benefit the Fran Crippen Elevation Foundation, which the Crippen Family has established to “Empower athletes who exemplify the principles Fran embodied as they journey to elevate themselves, by providing aid and advocating for safe competitive environments.”  We welcome swimmers of all ages, amateur and elite, to come out and enjoy this beautiful race while supporting our brother Fran.

The Fort Myers Estero Open Water Festival has been generous in offering to host the first annual Crippen Mile Open Water Swim.  With the support of USA Swimming, PMG Sports, and Elevation Athletics, the event is poised to be a tremendous success.  The race will takes place in the Gulf of Mexico, in the waters off of Fort Myers Beach.  The one mile “drag race” style course will start and finish on the beach and will go in one direction, from north to south.  Prior to the start of the race, the swimmers will be taken up the beach to the starting area and swim back towards the festival area.  There will be no wet suits or flotation devices and paddles allowed in the race.

We are all thrilled to be offering this event and look forward to seeing you all at the race!

Sincerely,

The EA Team
